Another year has passed by and I am feeling older. I am sure that people have heard "they don't make music like they used to" while listening to the radio. WELL! I am that guy who says that now. For the past few months I have been playing at a bar called Southland in Torrance. I get to play old school jams from 80's, 90's and early 2000's. I am not sure if they want me to play that, but I decided to say I am only playing old school jams. This helps me keep a balance of playing EDM (electronic dance music) and current music. I am a hip hop junkie and old school fanatic and I love what I play. If someone tells me to play new and current music, I tell them "NO".

On 10/29/11 I had 2 gigs going. I had a wedding earlier in the day which I will do a write up in another post since this is not suitable post. After my wedding gig I rushed over to Hollywood to get to get to my shift. I was worried about parking so I rushed over. Luckily I made it in time with about 15 because my shift was at midnight. I barely got a chance to walk around because when I got in VanGuard I had to Dj. Overall I had a good night and it was fun.

4. Last weekend on 9.10.11 was the be busiest weekend of the year for djing weddings. I djed three weddings in over 2 days with the help of Dj Toastee and Dj Mugen. I learned a few things during the weekend for a crazy weekend like this.

4. As if you didn't know I purchase a few new toys. I purchased the Pioneer DDJ-S1 controller and Beats Pro headphones by Monster.

3. About 2 months ago I decided to upgrade my hard drive in my Mac Book Pro to a dual drive. I took out my Hard Drive (HDD) and my optical drive and decided to put a 750gb HDD and a 120 solid state drive (SSD) in my computer. My computer runs much faster with about 25-30 second boot up time. I did most of the work myself as one of my friends helped me install the new OSX into my SSD.

2. I went to an Ableton seminar at USC last Friday (7.29.11) with Dj Mugen and Dj Eugenius. It was really informative and it gave me more insight about production on Ableton.

1. I had a gig last Saturday (7.30.11) night at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. The crowd only had about 45 minutes to dance but I think I rocked it.

0. The Power of twitter! I was at Xgames 17 spectating in the Staples Center when I " tweeted" a message. 3 minutes later......(this is what happened in the picture below)

Last Thursday (8.25.11) was my first Comic Con which was held in San Diego. I with with @JayJueLA. It was cool experience even though I went for 1 day only. I believe you need to spend at least 3 days there to get the full experience Enjoy the pictures.

I am in Hong Kong now and I can finally blog and log on to Facebook. Originally I was just going to stop over in Hong Kong for a night then head out to Tokyo. Japan. The trip that could of been.

As you can see I haven't been blogging much. The reason is that I have been in China vacationing and other reason which I will write about when I get back to the state in about a week. Right now I am in Hong Kong staying at my friends place. Our Original plan was to go to Tokyo, Japan during my visit in Hong Kong. We booked a last minute flight and hotel before I left to China.

Last Friday(3/11/11), while I was at the airport in Wuhan, I get a text message from my from my friend back home in L.A saying, " are you ok? I am not sure if you are in Japan or not". I wasn't sure what he meant at the time and I thought he was just concerned for my safety in China. I didn't really think anything of it.

I arrived in Guangzhaou I checked into my room and turned the TV on. I saw that Sendai and the surrounding cities have been demolished by an 9.0 earthquake, a tsunami which demolished the cities and villages near the Pacific Ocean. I was in shock and in awe of the devastation of the towns. At that point I wasn't sure how far Tokyo was from the epicenter and wasn't sure if our trip to Tokyo would be canceled or not. Ricky and I decided that we shouldn't go because it would be too dangerous.

Right now I am in Hong Kong and I am thinking that, the one place I wanted to visit(Japan), gets hit by the biggest earthquake. It was a blessing in disguise that going to Tokyo was at the end of my trip. I could of been in Tokyo now in mass chaos but God was looking out for me. I guess everyone has been affected by this tragedy one way or another and it is too bad that "when it rains, it pours" especially with all the disasters that are going on in Japan. I just pray for everyone who has been involved in this earthquake and the many lives that has been taken.

Happy Chinese New Year.

I haven't been blogging that much this past month because I have been working on "Feels Good Vol.2" mix tape. It has been about 3 weeks since I started. Some nights I have been up till 6- 7am working on it. I keep changing my mind with some of the songs. If you haven't heard the first "Feels Good" mix tape you can down load it here.

Just some information about "Feels Good" is, I take some of the best dance songs and build around them and use samples to make it a fun mix tape. I believe in about 2 weeks, this mix tape will be done and ready to pass out. I will post it on here once I get it done.

4. I realized a few things in the past 2 months, I only like playing old school. After djing at Donna's I am learning more about myself about my dj personality. I am having a good time with it and feels like I want to specialize in it only. I really have a good time with music from the 90's.

3. Saturday night I went to Exchange LA with Dj Koji One. Dj Koji One rocked 1500 people with his music. That place always amazes me with the sound and the venue.

2. I went to pick up some music from Dj Virman's place. It is funny how we talk about the same things about old days and how these new djs have it easy.

4. It was Halloween weekend. I had 4 gigs in over 2 days, luckily it was spread out. This was my first gig on Friday, which was in the afternoon. It was a building appreciation party for all the tenants. I only took an iphone pix. Gig 2 (friday night) was at Donna's which I didn't take any pictures.

3. Saturday I djed a high school homecoming dance for my friend DJ Hungtime soon to be
Dr. Hungtime. I was really surprised with these kids that they knew their old school music. The kids were really respectful and I had fun with these kids.

What is better than djing?.......... Djing and watching football at the same time.

Headphone are officially broken, but it still works. I been through at least 4 or 5 headphones since I started djing in 95.

Tape to the rescue. I guess it's time to look for new headphones. Any suggestions?

2. After my high school gig, I packed up and headed out to Oiwake's. When I got there Dj Mugen was rocking it. Everyone was dancing and looked like they were having a great time.

So the story of the night goes like this....... When I arrived at Oiwakes some girl asked to play house music at least 3 or 4 times and I don't have house music really, so I just started playing my own set and I was playing Eric Pryde's "Pjano" and shes says out loud"HOUSE MUSIC!" and gives me a high give. I'm thinking, this ain't house music. 5 min later she comes to me and ask for "teach me how to dougie" and I'm thinking that song has nothing to do with my set, so I just brush it off cause I don't want to play it. So in the next 20 min or so, She asked me at least 4 or 5 times to play it, then her boyfriend comes up and asked me to play it a few times. At this point I am annoyed because she keeps coming up. I wanted to smack the girl. Story of the night for party goers, don't ask a dj to request a song. Stop and look around, everyone else is dancing. That is my rant of the weekend.

The latest rumor buzz in the Dj Community is that the Technics 1200 will be discontinued, Panasonic issued a statement that the Technics 1200mk6 is discontinued but I am not sure about the other series like Mk3 or Mk5. I first heard of the news on Gizmodo.com "End of an Era". With that said I bought 2 turntables off craigslist from the weekend for a great price.

4. NBA season starts today. I am a huge NBA fan and I can't wait to see the underdogs win. GO CLIPS!

3. I attended a wedding last Saturday, but I still managed to work at the wedding. I set up sound for another wedding and I MC'ed my good friends wedding. I figured I can't sit still at weddings since I am working them all the time.

2. A few weeks ago someone made an indirect threat to me while I was working. I was about to talk some ISH to them but I kept my cool and I just walked away. Fighting while at work is not a good thing. I will try to write an article about it.

As you noticed I haven't been blogging as much. This update is "4" Monday XXL edition with tons of pictures from the past few weeks.

4. A few weeks ago I had a Saturday night off and I got to watch the 626 crew(I call them the 626 crew cause we all live in the 626 or SGV area) at one the biggest clubs in Downtown Los Angeles(DTLA) called Exchange LA(EXLA). Approximately 1500 people packed the club and it was just amazing to see a club like this in DTLA. If you didn't know, DTLA isn't really a tourist friendly spot to walk around but to see a mega club like EXLA is a good direction for DTLA. Hopefully DTLA will become more tourist friendly in the next 5 to 10 years.

3.Here was one of my weddings I djed a few weeks ago a the Disney Concert Hall. I had a blast with the crowd.

Set up took less than 30 minutes. Dj Surreal helped me unload and set my equipment up.

The venue was awesome.

2. Last Saturday, I djed in Laguna Beach at a Boutique hotel called 741 hotel off the PCH. The crowd was Great!

Thank God for the VCI-300 and powered speakers. I had to lug my equipment up the stairs because there weren't any elevators at the hotel.

I loved the deadwood center piece hung in the middle of the room.

This was the first time I experienced and played the Horah for a wedding. It was super hyped.

I had the crowd going all night!

1. After my Gig in Laguna Beach I drove straight to Chinatown in LA because I wanted to see my group, Sound Science Crew dj at Mountain bar. On my way back, I was debating, go home or Mtn Bar, I decided to go to see my crew. I arrived around 1:45 am as they were cleaning up, but it was worth going. We had special guest DJ Tony Jr djing for us with an all vinyl set. It always a pleasure to see Tony Jr as he never forgets a face or a name.

4. Thursday and Friday Toastee and myself Djed at Donna's in Gardena. Dj Surreal made an appearance. I think having us dj there is helping their business. On Friday there was a huge crowd and Donna was pleased to see many there.

3. Surreal, Koji One and I ate at Full House in China town before our gigs. We were talking about djing mostly and the old days of vinyl, ableton, microwave djs and where it is headed in the future.

3. Friday Night Toastee, Mugen and Myself Djed at Donna's cocktails. I felt like a promoter as I brought people in to this small dive bar. I felt like I had to talk to people because they drove far to get to Donna's. For those who came out I really appreciate it. Look for Sound Science Djs at Donna's this Thursday and Friday at Donna's.

2. I djed at the Langham hotel in Pasadena last Saturday. The ball room I djed in was super huge and it looked really nice. I will post more when I get pictures from the photographer.

1. Before my gig last Saturday, I stopped by Best Buy and I got a new toy last Saturday. Ipod nano. I took the picture with a nail clipper to show you the size.

o. Yesterday I picked up music from Rotations Record Pool. I just caught Virman as he was leaving for the MTV VMA's. I have to look through 13 gbs of music, I can't wait to find a gem.

4. Last Thursday 8/26 and Friday 8/27 I got a chance to dj with Toastee and Roldan at Donna's, which is a small bar. On Friday I djed old school music from the golden era of hip hop. Even though it was a small bar, I had about 5 or 6 people dancing and singing, this had to be one of my favorite memorable crowds because they appreciate the music I played for them. When I play my favorite music, and the crowd enjoys it also, it just makes my night.

The best part about last Friday night was when the waitress told me that she would get me a drink cause I was djing. She asked me "What do you want to drink", then someone from the crowd heard her ask me and he said " No, I am going to buy his drink!" because he was feeling my vibe. I think that was on of the best compliments I got in a while.

Last year sometime, I knew I had to get another computer. It was either a mac book pro or an Imac because I knew I couldn't use my MBP as my primary computer at home, and plus its almost 4 years old. I purchased this IMAC so I can use this at home. I plan to make music off this Imac.

Some specs:

Quad-Core Intel i7 2.93 GHz

2TB of storage space

4gb of Ram(prob upgrade later)

Unboxing is very exciting.

This box is MAJOR!

I had a hard time taking it out of the shipping box because of the size.

I opted for the wired Keyboard because I already have a wireless apple keyboard.

27 inches of pure goodness.

I love the plug and play.

I decided to purchase the track pad and the magic mouse.

The whole sha-bang-a-bang!

When Fat Beats used to be on Vermont I didn't have internet and I called 411 for the number. I accidentally called the wrong place. The conversation went like this..

One of my Best Weddings

One of my Best Weddings.

Yesterday I randomly goggled Dj Orbit and I found one of my gigs in the Next Exit Photography blog from last May. I have worked with them before in the past. They do great photography.

I have known Jason for a while, when told me that he just got engaged to Gloria, his first order of business was to hire me as his Dj. The planning for the music with Jason and Gloria was pretty simple because I knew what the couple wanted before they opened their mouths.

Since Jason and his groomsmen are HARD CORE Laker fans, I played some Lakers theme songs and I kept them crowd updated with the Lakers score that night since it was a playoff game. Good thing I had WiFi, I was watching the Laker game and Djing at the same time.

4. Look what I saw. Pix by DJ Mugen

3. I met with my clients last Saturday to finalize details for their wedding in a few weeks. I can't wait for their wedding because we have similar taste in music. This is the first wedding I am actually excited for in a while.

2. I DJed @ Industry on Saturday night for Dj Innovates birthday with Dj Doh Doh and Loquito. I didn't get to take pictures because I forget to bring my memory card. The club was packed and every table was sold out. I recorded the mix the whole night and it should be up in a few days.

1. I've come to realized that while mixing at the club last Saturday night, my mixing isn't as good as it should be. I have been scratching at home only and I have been paying less attention in mixing at home. I will have to work on it and practice with new music and be more patient while mixing.

4. I watched Inception last Friday night with some friends. This was the first movie I watched at a theater in over a year and a half. Inception made me think a lot and I really enjoyed the movie.

3. I went to check out Myhouse on Satruday to check out Dj Koji One and Dj Quickie. Myhouse is an incredible club, if you have never been there, I suggest you check it out.

2. My oldest sister flew home from Nashville to visit the family for a week. It is the first time that all 5 of us are under one house.

1. For the last 2 weeks I have been listening to good hip hop on the net called Pharcyde radio, which I am guessing they play all of Pharcydes favorite music. I heard stuff from tribe gangstarr, to Mos Def. IF you are old as I am, you'll love this net station.

Vinyl for sale (Sad Day)

It is a sad day for myself as I am putting my records up for sale on craigslist. I need the room in the garage. I have a bout 35-40 crates of records. To me these records are a piece of history for me, every song I can pin point a spot in my dj career. It is very sentimental to me and hard to let go but I figured I only keep the gems.

4. I went to Bass Lake last weekend which is about 40 minutes south of Yosimite. This isn't the first time 've been to Yosemite, however I believe it has been over 8 or 9 years since I went. I haven't been on a camping trip in a long time and I realized that I miss the nature. I found it real soothing to hear the sound of nature instead of city life.

3. Bass Lake secret watering hole. A park ranger told us about this spot near bass lake. The pictures say it all.

As you can see, Mist Trail, is more like a rain trail. My clothes got soaked but dried up quickly cause of the 100 degree heat.

1. After Mist Trail we headed up to Glacier Point. Glacier Point is an area where you can get a great view of Half Dome.

4. Friday I got a last minute gig. My mom asked me to do a favor for her friends, which was to play some back ground music for a teacher retirement party. I didn't really want to do it, but I can't refuse my mom's request.

3. Saturday I watched the USA lose against Ghana. I admit I am not a fan of soccer but I used to play when I was younger. I am a supporter of any US sport.

2. I am excited for America's Birthday!

1. My cousin took me to the Dodgers vs Yankees game in the Chavez Ravine. We sat in the all you can eat section. I thought Dodgers were going to win but the Yankees came back to win it.

I bought a new program which is called "Mixed in Key" which is suppose to key the songs. I thought about this when I read an article on a website about mixing songs in key which could keep the crowd going.

Mixed in Key will figure out which Key the song will be in. I started keying my songs last night and it might take a few weeks to do all my songs on my play list, but I think this program will be well worth it in the end. I figure this program is great for dance music such as trance, electro, house, etc.

Here is what Mixed in Key Does.

"The Story Behind Harmonic Mixing

Harmonic mixing eliminates key clashes. When you mix harmonically, your vocals, melodies and basslines will be in key. Harmonic mixing opens a new realm of creativity and allows you to achieve a "live mash-up" effect. You can find unusual combinations of songs to mix (The Beatles vs. Jay-Z), or just enjoy flawless mixing like Armin Van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk.

To use harmonic mixing, you need to know the key of every song that you play. Mixed In Key scans your entire MP3 and WAV music collection to make this easy. When scanning is done, Mixed In Key displays your key results in the Camelot Easymix notation (ex. 4A, 6B). "

"On this wheel, musical keys can be seen as "hours" on a clock. For example, 4 o'clock corresponds to 4B or 4A. The "B" letter represents Major keys. The "A" letter represents Minor keys.

To use harmonic mixing in your DJ sets, you can mix between songs by subtracting one hour (-1), adding one hour (+1), or staying in the same hour as your last song.

If you're in key of 4A, your next song can be 3A, 4A or 5A. It's just like subtracting or adding one hour.

Your mixes will be harmonic if you use this simple method. Harmonic mixing works for all music genres because it is based on music theory.

Improving Your DJing
You can change keys with every mix. Using this method, you can move around the Camelot wheel one step at a time.

For a special effect, you can mix between the inner and the outer circle. Try this: Stay in the same "hour," but change the letter. For example, you can mix from 10B to 10A. If you mix into 10A, your next song can be 10B (change letter again), 9A (subtract one hour), 10A (same hour), or 11A (add one hour).

Example mix
For your first harmonic mix, find two songs that have the same key code. Mix them together using your favorite DJ equipment or software, and you'll hear a smooth transition every time. From there, you can experiment with other harmonic mixes.

Brief note about using Mixed In Key

What does it mean when Mixed In Key reports two keys instead of one? Both keys are compatible with this particular song. You can use either one of them."

I am a video game geek.

I went to E3 with my good friend Brian, I believe E3 is the biggest video game show in America. Some of the games I liked were, Socom, MvsC3, Medal of Honor and all the 3d shooters. I was going to check out the Nintendo 3ds but the line was about 2 hours to view it.

Took a few days off from blogging, but I am back on the grind.

4. Just had an 5.9 earthquake a few minutes ago, I didn't even flinch, I guess I am used to it now. At least its better than hurricanes and tornadoes.

3. I am working on some new business cards designs with my graphic designer. It should be done with in 2 weeks.

"4" Memorial Day

What's good fam?
I was thinking about taking the Monday off but I decided just to go ahead and post. My Memorial Day was pretty good with lots of good networking.

4. On Friday I checked out Opera/Crimson to see Dj Aristocat and Dj Koji perform.

3. I djed a Wedding last Saturday at the Pacific Palms Hotel. The room was huge. Everything went smoothly.Over 450 People attended the wedding. This is the largest wedding I had in attendance in a while.I brought out my Pioneer Djm 909, Technics 1200s, QSC k12's,Jbl Dual 12's, Qsc plx 3000 amp and 1 light.

Luckily I was able to find wifi AGAIN to watch the Lakers vs Suns. Do you see a pattern here?

4. After my gig last Saturday I headed to Oiwakes for the late Dj Hideo (r.i.p.) Birthday bash. If you do not know who Hideo is, Dj Hideo passed away from cancer not too long ago, friends and family gathered together for this special night. 1. My Sunday, pretty chill, except that I was super exhausted. I was so exhausted, I fell asleep at half time during the Lakers vs Suns game on the couch. I didn't do much but pick up music from Rotations Record Pool (RRP). Twice a month I pick up from RRP. I get about 10-14 gigs of promotional music per pick up. Virman of Far East Movement(FM), Power 106 Dj and Eman's little brother is the director of the Pool.

Last weekend was jam packed with events for me. I have to do "4 Monday XL post" meaning I have to do a 2 parter, maybe even 3. Later on, I will post pictures and videos about the late DJ Hideo Birthday at Oiwakes, Sound Science Crew "Blend event" with Icy Ice and music pick up from Rotations Record Pool.

8. I went to visit some friends(Doh Doh, Innovate, Mugen) at a club in downtown Los Angeles called b52 last friday (5/21/10).

7. I djed a wedding last Saturday(5/22/10) at the Whiter Country Club.
Here is a screen shot of my set up. I am going light on my gigs these days. I am using Vestax Vci-300, two Qsc K12 powered speakers on stands, Mackie mixing board, Shure wireless mic and one Light on a crank stand. That is all.

They were in a circle because the groom wanted to break dance.

4. Check out Sound Science Djs and Platinum Club's event called "BLEND" @ Mountain Bar this Saturday with Surreal, Chris the Chemist, Ken Ozawa and special Dj guest, DJ ICY ICE of the Beat Junkies, Legend Ent and Power 106 crew.

2. An estimated 500 high schoolers attended the MKHS 2010 Prom at the Millenium Biltmore hotel last Saturday. I worked solo that night with a little help from my cousin unloading the truck. The hardest part about the HS dance's are playing clean edits, I think I slipped playing regular versions once or twice.

1. Quote of the night for last Saturday night for the prom I djed at.
"Can you play NORMAL music?"

Dj Surreal, Goose and Kaotiq asked me what the quote was about.

I was playing for the crowd, once you get the crowd going there no stopping a DJ in playing whatever they want. I was playing my fast set(150 bpm) with these songs, Brown eye girl, my sharona, la bamba etc. I didn't play that that set for more than 8-10 minutes because I like to switch these old pop songs fast because these kids are 17-18 range but these songs are still house hold names. While I was playing those songs, a girl came up to me and said " can you play NORMAL music", at that point I wanted to laugh but I kept my stuff together, I pointed at the crowd and said "look at the crowd, everyone is dancing you should be dancing too and everyone is enjoying themselves". She left and I switched it up for newer songs.

I just hate how she said, "NORMAL SONGS", she could of said, can you play current songs? For most of the night I played current songs with in a 3 year span plus I was jumping around from BPM to BPM to switch it up. If one person comes up to you and requests a song or a genre and the dance floor is packed, I am going to play for the majority and not that minority. Any thoughts or comments about topic? What would you do?

You are an old school Dj when you were in a Record Pool back in the day.

I believe people have seen some of my vinyl collection. Back when I started djing around 95/96 music was harder to come by. Finding a song on vinyl was like find a needle in the hay stack. Today, I just use the search function and find the song in less than a second, if I don't have the song, I will look it up on the web and down load it. The art of digging is gone.
